A waterfall in El Yunque Forest

Few people in the US, when asked to describe their national forest system, would picture a tropical rain forest.  El Yunque,National Forest in Puerto Rico is a paradise of jungles and waterfalls.  Greenery covers everything and mist blows through the ridgelines.  The winding drive up PR route 191 is spectacular, but to really experience El Yunque you need to leave the road on the many walking trails.  The forest will swallow you in its beauty.

Cinque Terre

Manarola, one of the “five lands” of the Cinque Terre region of Italy.

Cinque Terre is one of those perfect places in the world.  It has everything–rugged, picturesque shoreline, picture perfect villages, and precarious walking paths that snake along the sea cliffs from one place to another.  It is the steepness of the terrain that creates the beauty of this place, both directly and indirectly.  Because roads cannot easily reach these villages, the footprint of modern life is very light here.
